KITRAC Engineering Solutions was awarded the LV power system contract for a new manufacturing factory in Mombasa's Industrial Area. The facility processes food packaging materials and operates three shifts, requiring an extremely reliable power supply with minimal planned outage windows. KITRAC designed and installed the entire HV/LV interface, motor control infrastructure, and building services electrical systems.
The installation centred on a 1,000A main LV switchboard feeding eight motor control centres (MCCs) serving production lines, compressor room, cold store, and building services. Each MCC was fitted with variable speed drives (VSDs) on motors above 7.5 kW to reduce energy demand. A 500 kVA diesel generator with a synchronising panel enables the factory to remain operational during Kenya Power planned outages with zero production loss.
KITRAC's team of six electricians and two engineers worked exclusively during planned production shutdown windows to install and commission the equipment, ensuring zero impact on the client's production schedule. The project was completed in 16 weeks and the factory has since operated without a single electrical-related downtime event.
1,000A main LV switchboard with bus-section coupler, feeding 8 motor control centres — designed for N+1 redundancy on critical production line feeds.
22 variable speed drives installed on motors above 7.5 kW, reducing peak demand by an estimated 18% and significantly extending motor service life on high-cycle equipment.
500 kVA generator with synchronising and load management panel — allows seamless manual or automatic transfer without interrupting any active production line during changeover.
Dedicated electrical services for cold store (including anti-condensation heaters), compressor room (explosion-rated), and external yard lighting to IEC Zone 1 classification.
All installation work scheduled within planned downtime windows — zero production-hours lost to electrical works; factory accepted handover after first-time EPRA inspection pass.
